Finding a good hosting service is critical to your website's long-term
survival. Price is always a major, but don't overlook other issues such as bandwidth/traffic
allowance, storage capacity, SSL secure server access and more. The best host is the one that
gives you reliable service, good technical support, and room to grow. Between my own needs
and those of my clients, I've had experiences with several dozen hosting services and so
I've seen the best and the worst.
There's no excuse for staying with a bad host. Changing
hosts is not nearly as traumatic as it might seem. Even large sites can be moved in a few
hours. The key is to leave your old hosting service active until the new service is up and
running for at least 48 hours. Redirect all Email on the old service to any address that's
not connected to your domain name so that you won't lose any messages - like a GMail or Hotmail
mailbox - or post a notice that your EMail is temporarily unavailable. For e-commerce sites, you'll also need to shut down your shopping cart on the old host
during the transition. This way your site is never "down".
If you don't have a website yet, one of your first decisions is
choosing a company to host your site. Here are some hosting services for you to consider.
And don't miss our selection of books on Internet security that
will help you make sure that your site is not vulnerable to hackers.
Go-Daddy Web Hosting
In more than ten years of creating websites, I've never found a hosting service to match
Go-Daddy. They have competitive rates for all of their services, from web hosting to domain
name registration. But the thing that sold me was their technical support. Every time I've
called them, the technical support person was thoroughly knowledgeable, incredibly polite and articulate,
and was always able to understand my explaination of the problem. I started out with some simple
hosting packages and have grown into buying a virtual dedicated server. And even though that service
isn't supposed to come with technical support, I've never been refused help. The only downside is
that their website is very cluttered and never ceases to push additional services of dubious
value. Still top notch!
Lunar Pages Web Hosting
Several clients of mine have used this service and recommend them. They do have a very easy
to use website and their servers are very fast.
