Yes, we're in a pretty gloomy market for real estate these days. So if you're in the market for a new home, you need to learn all you can about how to choose the right house and when the price is right. Lenders are understandably much stricter in establishing buyers' creditworthiness, and you'll likely have to make a substantial down payment in order to get decent financing terms. While a knowledgable real estate agent or broker can be a great asset, their interests do not always coicide with yours. So take the time to learn all you can before you even talk to a real estate agent or broker. Stop by your bank and ask for their advice about how to prepare for taking out a new home loan in these days of falling real estate values. Your banker will give you guidelines on the most you should spend on a house based on your financial condition, including the different kinds of loans available and how to budget for the loan payments, local taxes, and insurance.
