A house is not a home until you've had to use the plunger to retrieve something the dog dropped into the porcelain convenience. When something goes wrong, it's often a difficult decision whether it would be better to call in a professional or try to repair the problem yourself. Many household repairs are within the grasp of the typical homeowner. My old house had a toilet that seemed to be cursed. The tank valve system would never last more than two or three years, so I became pretty good at replacing all of the workings. I also got good at replacing the p-trap in the kitchen sink because it, too, would fail every couple of years doubtless because of the erosion by dishwasher detergent.
Electrical problems are trickier, of course, since the risks of doing
it yourself includes serious injury or death. Still, many small repairs are safe enough
for the homeowner if you stay focused on safety. Replacing light fixtures is a common
chore that everyone can do. As always, begin by turning off the fuse or circuit-breaker
for the fixture. Do not depend solely on the wall switch to protect you. Once you've
unscrewed the fixture, you'll see that the wires are all color-coded. The procedure for
replacing the fixture simply requires observing the wiring of the old installation, removing
it, and installing the new fixture with the same set-up. Replacing wall switches and power
outlets is also a possible DIY project, but I would not suggest that you try that without
a good home electrical guide book at your side. And again, be sure to turn off the power
in any room where you will be exposing the wiring. A pair of rubber gloves wouldn't come
amiss, either, as an added layer of safety.
The home gardener is limited only by his willingness to work. One of the thorniest issues is the decision of whether or not to use fertilizers and pesticides. If you do decide to use chemicals on your lawn and garden, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for safety. These chemicals can do damage to you and your neighbors that will not be immediately apparent if you do not use them properly. And consider the risk of wind and rain spreading these chemicals beyond your property to your neighbor's yards and to the local water supply. An ounce of prevention is certainly the best choice here.
