With all of the emphasis on big screen HDTVs, there's a dearth of
information on DVD players, recorders and accessories to support the
new disc formats and bridges to the future for those of us who are upgrading their
equipment one piece at a time.
If you have a Hi-Definition Television, I think you'll agree that the
picture is stunning. The best part is that even standard definition broadcasts and videos
look very good on most sets. When it comes to videos, though, you can find you have a difficult
decision to make. The picture I get from my 1990's vintage DVD player looks much better than
I ever expected. Having bought my new TV during the height of the format wars between Blu-Ray and
HD-DVD, I expected to end up buying an up-converting player and wait for the war to end and the
prices to come down to Earth. So I was pleasantly surprised to find how satisfied I was with my
old player.
If you aren't happy with the picture from your old DVD player, then the choice is between an up-converting player that will enhance the image to near HD-quality, or bite the bullet and buy a Blu-Ray player. There are many upconverting DVD players available for under $100.00. My brother-in-law has an all-Sony entertainment complex, and seems to be very satisfied with the benefits of simpler integration you get by sticking with a single manufacturer. But if you're a little more adventuresome, Phillips is making some very nice little players for about 20% lower prices than Sony.
If you just can't stand not having the real deal, then a Blu-Ray player
is what you need. More manufacturers are offering updated players now that include support
more of the advanced features available in the Blu-Ray format. The prices are starting
to fall a little, but most players are still in the $300-$500.00 range. While we would
normally expect price reductions, the price of oil and the weak US dollar may keep prices
rather high through Christmas 2008. At this time, the best choice for a Blu-Ray player is
actually a Sony Playstation 3. Not only is it the most advanced Blu-Ray player available,
you also get a cutting-edge video game system. And while the basic system costs $399.99,
you can sometimes find bundles that will include the required remote control, free games
and/or Blu-Ray movies, or other discounts. Very sweet.
Check your local retailer on a weekday afternoon when they won't mind
giving you a demonstration of video players. And don't miss the listings of Blu-Ray players from Amazon.com below.
They stock some themselves and also sell DVD players from other retailers.
Best Buy
Good selection of upconverting DVD players in stores and online.
Circuit City
Poor selection of DVD players in stores. Much better on their website.
Wal-Mart Stores
Wal-Mart is offering some great deals on the Sony Playstation 3 in bundles.
